Dr. Fernando Farelas has been appointed as the project leader of the Top of the Line Corrosion Joint Industry Project. Dr. Farelas earned an engineering degree in Metallurgy from the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico. He then went on to earn a M.Sc. and Ph.D in Materials and Corrosion from the Mexican Petroleum Institute. Fernando has worked at the ICMT in two different occasions. In 2008 as a visiting scholar, and since 2010 as a postdoctoral reasearch assistant. Since he joined the ICMT he has been actively involved in several projects developing an expertise in many aspects of CO2 corrosion of pipeline steel (surface analysis, material characterization, corrosion mechanisms, electrochemistry, etc.) and also has experience related to naphthenic acid corrosion. In leading the TLC-JIP, Fernando will manage all aspects of the project as well as guide graduate students with their experimental and analytical work related to CO2/H2S corrosion.
