NACE 2008 Student Activities

October, 2018

NACE Ohio University Student Section invited three volunteers from our CCJIP board members, Dr. Sandra Hernandez, Dr. Tracey Jackson, and Dr. Yao Xiong to give us a career experiences sharing talk during 2018 Oct. board meeting. The students felt more prepared to the job hunting after this discussion. Future section activities, such as alumni mentorship, more invited presentations on this topic, and even mock interviews have been suggested by the board members. Thank you all for making this initiative happened! We shall try to make it sustainable and live as a legacy to the future section leaders.

Ohio University's Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology hosted alum Keith George from BP Technology. Mr. George discussed his current job position at BP Technology and focused on his work on off-shore platforms. The engineering problems encountered on off-shore oil rigs are numerous, but Mr. George gave a good description of the key corrosion issues that he has faced as well as some safety concerns that occur both on-shore and off-shore. We at Ohio University Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology are proud of the success of fellow alum Keith George and are grateful for him to come and present “real world” material to us so that we can better assess what job fields are open to us after we graduate.

Mike Joosten from Conoco Phillips visited the Ohio University Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology. Mr. Joosten gave a lecture entitled “Corrosion – A Variety of Shapes and Sizes” in which he discussed the types of corrosion issues that arise in off-shore drilling and showed the students examples of real corrosion issues that he has faced as a corrosion engineer. The presentation also gave us in-sight on how the research we generate as an academic institution goes to help the corrosion issues faced in industry. Mr. Joosten’s presentation covered a vast topic of corrosion issues such as general corrosion, pitting corrosion, coatings, galvanic protection, as well as both internal and external corrosion of pipelines.

Dr. David Shifler from Office of Naval Research, visited the Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology, and gave a lecture to the student members. The title of the lecture is “Factors that influence the performance of high-temperature coatings”.

Congratulations to Dezra Hinkson, a Master’s student at Ohio University, received a $1000 book scholarship from the NACE bookstore. She was able to purchase 8 books to further her knowledge of corrosion!

Seventeen students from Ohio University attended NACE2006, San Diego.

Great thanks to:

  • NACE Foundation supported $3200 as NACE Foundation Travel Assistantship.
  • NACE Southwest Ohio Section supported $1500.
  • Ohio University Graduate Student Senate has supported $1200.
  • The rest of the expense from the Institute.
